Side one featuring two cool originals, a pair of power-pop numbers clearly showing this young band has plenty to offer...the flipside offering two covers, the version of Captain Beefheart's 1967 "I'm Glad" fairly faithful, sounding like it could be from a band of teenagers in July 1967 who were much more excited about Safe as Milk than Sgt. Pepper (the two albums released only weeks apart) and decided to record a concise version of "I'm Glad" on their dad's reel-to-reel in the basement with some wonderful results that surfaced decades later...this doo-woppy number contrasted with the last cut on this EP, notching the tempo back up to what we heard on the first side with a version of "Turning Japanese" originally by English outfit The Vapors in 1980, this version pretty faithful, but more raw and maybe a bit faster, the guitars more loud and pronounced and less precise, sounding almost like a live demo of the original, which is never a bad way to approach a cover...more punk rock and maybe even getting closer to the core of the song, which to me seemed like a young man messed up in his head about some girl, with the "Turning Japanese" not making any sense to me other than that maybe after a trip to the doctor and purchase of some x-ray specs, he'd completely flipped his lid and lost his mind and climbed aboard the crazy train... Anyway, it's a great end to another essential 7" from Drunk Dial.
